Why Going to Hospital May Slow Down Your Labour (and How to Avoid That)
Everything was going well .. your labour was flowing naturally, your body was opening, and you were fully in your rhythm.
Then came the moment to head to the hospital.
But as soon as you walked through those doors...
your contractions slowed down.
Maybe they even stopped.
You’re not alone if this happened to you and it’s not your fault.

Once you arrive at the hospital, it’s common for things to change.
Suddenly, there are bright lights, people walking in and out, monitors beeping, and unfamiliar faces asking questions.
Everyone’s waiting for you to “progress.”
You start to feel the pressure as if you need to perform.
But labour doesn’t work that way.
When we feel watched or unsafe, our body produces adrenaline ; the stress hormone that tells your body:
“This isn’t the time to give birth.”
Adrenaline slows or even pauses labour because your body’s main job is to keep you safe.
It doesn’t know the difference between being chased by a lion and feeling exposed under hospital lights.
So what can you do?
If you’re planning a hospital birth, there are powerful ways to help your body stay in a calm, safe, and grounded state.
Here are a few simple, yet deeply effective practices to create that sense of safety:
Create your birth bubble
Bring your favourite playlist — music that relaxes you and keeps you connected to your rhythm.
Use essential oils you love — put a few drops on a napkin and smell it when you need to reconnect with your breath.
Make the space feel like you
Ask your birth partner or doula to prepare your room:
Dim the lights or use electronic candles.
Play calming sounds.
Bring your own pillow or a familiar item from home.
What your eyes recognise, your body feels safe with.
Protect your boundries and peace
Knowing your birth rights is one of the most empowering things you can do.
Hospital routines aren’t always woman-centred, and you have the right to say no to checks or interventions that don’t feel right for you.
Your body — your birth — your boundaries.
Remember
Birth unfolds most beautifully when you feel safe, supported, and seen.
So whether you’re giving birth at home, in a birth centre, or in a hospital … your environment matters.
Ask yourself:
What would make me feel calm and safe during my birth?
